ASME VIII Div.2

Overview

ASME Section VIII Division 2 provides advanced rules for pressure vessel design using design-by-analysis methods. It enables higher allowable stress limits compared to Division 1, resulting in thinner walls, optimized weight, and cost-efficient designs for high-performance applications.

Design Method: Design-by-Analysis

Allowable Stress: 1/3 × SMTS

Certification: ASME U2 Stamp

FEA: Mandatory for stress evaluation

Key Features

  • Advanced stress analysis using FEA
  • Reduced material thickness and weight
  • Mandatory fatigue analysis for cyclic loading
  • Higher allowable stress compared to Div 1
  • Strict NDE and inspection requirements

Stress Analysis Categories

Category Symbol Description Allowable Limit
Primary Membrane Pm Pressure-induced stress ≤ S
Local Membrane PL Localized stress ≤ 1.5S
Bending Pb Bending across thickness ≤ 1.5S
Secondary Q Thermal/constraint stress ≤ 3S
Peak F Fatigue-critical stress Fatigue curve limits

Fatigue Analysis

Fatigue analysis is mandatory when vessels are subjected to cyclic loading conditions. Division 2 requires evaluation using fatigue curves to ensure long-term reliability.

  • More than 1,000 pressure cycles during design life
  • Significant temperature fluctuations
  • Pressure variations exceeding 20%
  • External mechanical loads from piping

Finite Element Analysis (FEA)

Division 2 requires detailed stress evaluation using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Stress categorization and verification are performed as per Part 5 to ensure structural integrity.

NDE Requirements

  • Full Radiography (RT)
  • Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
  • Stricter acceptance criteria
  • Higher inspection frequency

ASME U2 Stamp Certification

The ASME U2 Stamp certifies compliance with Division 2 requirements. It involves advanced engineering analysis, strict quality control, and third-party inspection to ensure safety and performance.
